| Abstract |
A Johne's disease control program based on herd testing with the Johnes absorbed EIA (PARACHEK®) and faecal culture was implemented in 25 Victorian dairy herds in 1990. Recognised management strategies to control disease were adopted and test positive animals were removed annually prior to the calving period. After three years the average herd prevalence was reduced. Annual serological and faecal culture testing was continued in eleven herds. Progress in disease control was influenced by the effectiveness of calf management and hygiene, the introduction of infected cattle to the herd, the effectiveness of diagnostic tests to detect infected animals and the timeliness of culling reactors. A review of progress in these herds over the past 8 years will be presented in the paper.
