| Abstract |
In order to develop an easy and rapid molecular typing method of Mycobacterium avium, 15 loci of variable numbers of tandem repeats (VNTR) were investigated. Phylogenic analysis, which was estimated from Manhattan distance matrix data of allele profiles of VNTR by Fitch-Margoliash criterion and some related least squares criteria without an evolutionary clock using PHYLIP (ver. 3.57c), divided the reference strains of M. avium into 4 major clusters. M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis strains formed one cluster and M. avium strains with IS901 also formed one cluster. Sequence analysis of the representative PCR products of each cluster in 15 loci revealed the presence of single nucleotide polymorphism and supported the clustering of the phylogenic analysis of VNTR
